2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Follows Mixed Reception

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire content from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our audience.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His management and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the recent years developing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to keep witnessing the development of the game in the time to follow.

David

Title Details and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that change every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your team can secure victory? The decision is yours."

The game has not yet received an official launch window or consoles, but fans can expect more updates as development progresses.
