The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
