"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of famous supporters have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness demanded a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
